WAS FLOATING IN THE CANAL
Body of Joseph Town Recovered Yesterday Afternoon.

The body of Joseph Towne (colored) was found floating in the canal about 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Towne was drowned Friday morning while on his way to work, and the body was discovered by some of the workmen at the Tredegar Works.

Coroner Taylor was at once notified, and after viewing the body he deemed an inquest unnecessary, having come to the conclusion that the cause of death was accidental drowning.

Towne was walking along with another colored man named Thomas Moore, previous to reaching the canal. When the canal was reached Moore was several yards ahead. When Towne fell in the canal he cried for help, but his companion could not reach him in time to save him. The body will be buried by the city authorities.
