From the Richmond Examiner, 5/25/1864
THE CADET CORPS IN RICHMOND. - The fine corps of Cadets from the Virginia Military Institute, Colonel Smith commanding, reached this city on Monday evening, fresh from the victorious encounter of General Breckinridge with Seigel, and bivouacked in Capitol Square. They were attended by the Armory Band, and yesterday evening gratified a large number of visitors and spectators by an exhibition of their unsurpassed drill. After drill they were reviewed by Governor Smith, who, from his portico, welcomed them to Richmond, and paid them a glowing tribute for their gallantry and devotion as exhibited in the victory over Seigel in the Shenendoah Valley. At the conclusion of the Governor's remarks, President Davis appeared and addressed the Cadets, welcoming and thanking them for the part they had played in the struggle for liberty.
