TREDEGAR WORKS WILL SOON RESUME WORK
Expected to Be Placed in Operation for Manufacture of Munitions for United States.
Plans are being completed by which the plant of the Tredegar Iron Works will be placed in operation for the manufacture of munitions for the United States government, it was learned last night on excellent authority. All efforts to confirm this report, however, were without results. Officers of the Tredegar Company said that it was the policy of the company to make no statements to the press.
When workmen were discharged several days ago it was merely for the purpose of making an inventory, it was stated, of the stock and equipment of the plant. The company has practically completed a large order for the British government, and is now understood to be preparing for additional orders for the Federal government. The workmen were told to secure employment in Richmond for a few days, if possible, but not to leave this city, as they would be wanted shortly.
A number of workmen have had their record investigated, both as to their nationality and to the length of time they have been employed at the plant. They are also being photographed, these pictures being used, it is understood, for passes which are to be issued when operations are resumed at the plant.
