Arrangements Completed.
Ben Greet’s manager has about completed arrangements for the appearance of the Woodland Players in this city on Monday, May 11th. At 4 o’clock, in the yard of the old Van Lew home, in future to be known as the Chimborazo Sanatorium, and under the auspices of the Retreat for the Sick, the matinee performance, “As You Like It,” will begin; and at half-past 8 o’clock “Much Ado About Nothing” will be presented.
Mr. Greet’s interpretation of Shakespeare’s plays is unique, in that he endeavors to do away with all artificial decorations, and presents them as far as possible as they were presented in the time of the great dramatist.
With no decorations or surroundings save natural ones, with the blue of the sky above them and the grass beneath their feet and the drooping limbs of the old trees on either side, the players are surrounded with only natural beauties, and their acting is, in consequence, of so fine a quality as to make one forget the lack of the familiar stage decorations of the day. Their costumes are of the style of the Renaissance, which helps to complete and make perfect the production.
