EXTRA.
GLORIOUS!
FALL OF
RICHMOND!
CAPTURED BY THE BLACK TROOPS.
The following startling and glorious news is just received at this office. It is official:
WAR DEPARTMENT – 10.45 a. m., April 3.
Gen. Dix:
It appears from a dispatch of General Weitzell, just received by this Department, that our forces under his command are in Richmond, having taken it at 8.5 this morning.
EDWIN M. STANTON,
Secretary of War.
LATEST FROM RICHMOND.
LEE RETREATING.
GRANT PURSUING.
Jeff. Davis and his Cabinet Not Captured.
RICHMOND ON FIRE.
“SHALL IT BURN?”
The People Say “No!”
The President will Make a Triumphal Entre into Richmond this Afternoon.
General GRANT telegraphs at noon that we are in full possession of Richmond. He says to the Secretary of War: “A part of the city is on fire. Shall it burn?”
Secretary Stanton read the dispatch to an immense crowd of people in front of the War office, at about twelve o’clock, and asked the question “What answer shall I return to General Grant?”
The multitude impulsively responded, “Let it burn!” But the more thoughtful cried out “No, no, don’t destroy it; we can make good use of it.”
The latter reply will probably be the substance of the Secretary’s reply. Gen. Grant says Lee is hastily retreating upon the Danville road; that our forces are making a vigorous pursuit, and our cavalry and light artillery are attacking his flanks.
Bogus President Davis and his Cabinet have fled from Richmond.
President LINCOLN will make a triumphal entre into Richmond this afternoon and establish his headquarters this evening where Davis’s were this morning!
