A very strange and curious story is in circulation to the effect that a strong effort was made a few days ago by a number of lawyers and politicians of Richmond, Va., and elsewhere, to induce Miss Van Lew, late postmistress, to refuse to surrender the Richmond post-office to her successor, Col. Foster, on the ground that his appointment was null and void, inasmuch as President Hayes was not legally elected, and thus bring the matter up for trial in the supreme court of the United States. The scheme fell through, as Miss Van Lew was unwilling to enter into the arrangements. Among those most prominently mentioned as the leaders of the scheme are Gen. Brady F. Johnson, Gen. B. F. Butler, Simon Cameron, Senator Blaine and others.
