From the Norfolk (Va.) Virginian, 1/23/1896, p. 5, c. 4
Miss Van Lew, who was postmaster of Richmond soon after the war has taken up an idea that she can sing, and in reply to an advertisement has offered her services to Grace Street Baptist Church to render the soprano parts in the choir. It is needless to say that if her offer is accepted the building will be packed at her first appearance. Miss Van Lew was a staunch Unionist and in recognition of her services President Grant made her postmaster. She is now well down the sunset side of the hill of life.
