THE TRAVEL ACROSS THE JAMES RIVER PONTOONS is something like the tide that surges back and forth through Broadway. There is a constant stream of government wagons, country wagons, market carts, staff officers, orderlies, cavalry, and citizen and soldier foot passengers streaming back and forth, going by one bridge and coming by another.
