The Washington Statue. – The equestrian statue of Washington in this city, the pride of Virginia and of the South, has furnished the committee of Congress with a device for the Seal of the Confederate States, a subject which has puzzled the brains of our statesmen and amateur artists for two long years past. The House yesterday adopted it with great unanimity, the only difference of opinion being in regard to the motto; while the numerous classic designs heretofore presented met with little or no favor. The device is simply an equestrian portrait of Washington, encircled with a wreath composed of the chief agricultural productions of the South. The motto is, Deo duce vincemus – God being our leader, we will conquer.
