SALE OF VAN LEW RELICS.
Sentimentality Apparently Missing at Boston, in Most Instances.

BOSTON, November 21. – The articles of historic interest left by Miss Elizabeth L. Van Lew, the Union spy, of Richmond, which were sent here from the southern city to be sold at auction, brought about $1,000, to-day. Sentimentality was missing, apparently, in most of the bids, except in one instance, when the flag that was hung from the Van Lew house brought $75. Mrs. Nathaniel Thayer was the purchaser. The letter written by President Grant to Miss Van Lew, notifying her of her appointment as postmistress of Richmond, and a picture of the President, with an autographic endorsement, were purchased by Mr. L. B. Merriam, for $4.
