From the Richmond Dispatch, 5/8/1863, p. 1, c. 5
Dull – Yesterday out of thirty-two stalls in the Second Market twenty were closed. The dozen that were open appeared to have an average of about fifty pounds of meat on each. The price of the latter now ranges from $1.50 to $2 per pound. The latter for the best, which looked tough and sinewy enough to try the endurance of the most substantial masticators. The show of garden stuff was very meagre, but the prices were high enough to satisfy anybody.
