Bursting of Shells – Two condemned shells that were being melted up, bursted in the furnace of Cook’s iron foundry, on 8th street, yesterday, with a loud report. A piece of one of the missiles flew upwards and carried off the top of the furnace, while another made its way through the smelting machine, struck against a barrel, and threw down and bruised one of the workmen. A great deal of labor has been expended by foundrymen in trying to render condemned shells harmless, but, as frequent explosions prove, thus far without effect.
