From the Richmond Dispatch, 3/11/1863, p. 1, c. 5
The Markets. – The weather or some other cause still operates to keep supplies of beef and all articles of food from reaching the Richmond markets. Everything used as food commands the most extravagant prices. Butter sells, when it can be obtained, at three dollars per pound; the best fresh beef (and that not very good) at $1.25 per pound; corned beef at $1 per pound; sweet potatoes $16 per bushel; Irish potatoes $12. In the Second Market yesterday fifteen of the butchers’ stalls were closed for want of material with which to operate.
