From the Richmond Dispatch, 7/3/1861, p. 2, c. 7
Praiseworthy Act. - When the fire broke out at the Penitentiary a night or two since, the 2d Lieut. of the Garde Lafayette immediately formed his company and marched to the scene of disaster, where the Garde rendered the most efficient service, both in guarding the prisoners and working the fire-engines. Most of the members of the Garde are old firemen. The Captain and 1st Lieutenant of the corps were temporarily absent at the time. Such disinterested conduct deserves a handsome acknowledgment. The Garde are worthy of all praise.
