From the Richmond Dispatch, 5/22/1862, p. 2, c. 4
Inquest. – An inquest was held by the Coroner, on Tuesday evening, over the body of Daniel Hickey, found dead in the tall white brick house on the left hand side of Main street, where the street turns towards Rocketts. The murdered man was found in the room of Mrs. Murphy, a relative, located in the second story. The latter had been also awfully pounded and bruised by the murderers. The jury having examined the body of Hickey, found three deep stabs in his back, between the right shoulder blade and the small of the back. There was also a gash between the finger and thumb of the right hand, which looked as though received while the deceased was attempting to grasp the weapon of his assailant. Having completed the examination of the body, and examined all parties conversant with the circumstances attending the murder, the inquest was concluded by the rendering of the following verdict: "Daniel Hickey came to his death by wounds inflicted with a bowie-knife in the hands of a man whose name is unknown to the jury; the man aforesaid being aided and abetted in the act by one Michael Lillis and another man, whose name is also to the jury unknown." None of the parties charged with complicity in the offence had been arrested up to a late hour yesterday evening.
