                  On the 28th ult. I received an order from you directing me not to allow “any one to trade with the prisoners.” This order has been published at the prison & is well known to the guard. I also received verbal orders from the Gen. directing me to arrest any one found trading with the Yankees and to confiscate the money or goods. One of our stupid sentinels today passed private Jno. Sergeant into the prison and allowed him to buy from a prisoner an overcoat. Private Sergeant has been frequently on guard at this post and must be acquainted with the rules.

I send him to you under guard also send the coat. I beg that prompt action may be taken as I wish to put a stop to this contraband trading at once. I will have the sentinel who passed him in [page break] arrested.
