From the Richmond Examiner, 3/8/1866, p. 3, c. 3
THE ELEPHANT BONES, which have created so much curiosity in the lower part of the city, were examined yesterday by several more eminent surgeons and anatomists, who gravely pronounced them, not the bones of an elephant, but those of his great superior, a mastodon, that for untold ages have been lying buried and bleaching beneath the soil of Manchester. The bones are on exhibition at the feed store of Mr. Turner, opposite Castle Thunder. Mr. Samuel Maccubbin, one of the firm, will take pleasure in showing the elephantine specimens to the curious.
