From the Richmond Examiner, 7/21/1863
A PRISONER SHOT BY THE GUARD. – Yesterday afternoon one of the Yankee prisoners confined in the prison opposite Castle Thunder was fired on by the guard, for a persistent violation of one of the prison rules, and wounded in the right arm so severely that amputation had to be resorted to. The operation was performed by Dr. Saval, surgeon of the Confederate States Military Hospital. The rule violated was one in relation to prisoners protruding their persons beyond the windows, and spitting upon or otherwise annoying the guard. The guard obeyed his instructions in firing upon the prisoner, and the wounded man has only himself to blame.
