From the Richmond Dispatch, 7/7/1881, p. 1, c. 4

DROWNED IN THE CANAL. – Daniel Beach, a helper at one of the puddling furnaces at the Tredegar Works, was drowned late yesterday afternoon in the canal in front of the Tredegar store. His body was recovered shortly afterwards and viewed by the Coroner. From information derived from persons who witnessed the affair, it is hard to say whether the drowning was accidental or not. The deceased was seen to pull off his shoes and wade into the water until he had gotten beyond his depth, when it was observed that he was fast drowning. A gentleman standing near procured a plank and went to his relief, but the man either refused or was too far gone to accept the proffered aid. The deceased resided at No. 713 Church street, and leaves a wife but no children.
