From the Richmond Dispatch, 3/29/1855, p. 1, c. 3
MR. DOUGLAS. – In our brief notice of this gentleman’s speech at the African Church, on Tuesday night last, the words “Know Nothings” were accidentally omitted. We therefore republish the paragraph, in a corrected form, in order that the reader may the better understand the substance of his remarks, to which we alluded:
“Mr. Douglas declared that the Democratic party had been beaten all over the country by a fusion of Abolitionists, Free Soilers, Maine liquor law men and Know Nothings, and then proceeded by argument to prove the conservatism of the Democratic party of the North, and its firm adherence to the constitution.”
